Sophie Wessex's daughter Lady Louise Windsor wears timeless 'princess coat' to Ascot

In the fickle world of fashion few things remain unchanged over the years.

But it seems female Royals down the ages have been able to count on one timeless garment when braving inclement weather on special occasions.

The princess coat has been a favourite of a very young Queen Elizabeth II.

And little has changed decades later as Sophie Wessex's daughter Lady Louise chose to wear the classic item during a trip to the races today.

Princess Margaret Rose arrives at Olympia with her older sister Princess Elizabeth and their mother Queen Elizabeth, formerly Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, wife of King George VI, on 26th June 1934

The ninth in line to the throne, was pictured cheering on Simonsig to victory in the Bettfred Novices Steeple Chase, while wearing the tweed knee-length coat to keep out the chill.

But flash back almost eight decades and there is a striking similarity with that picture of a very young Queen.

In the past Prince Edward and wife Sophie have been reluctant to allow Lady Louise to be photographed because she was born with exotropia, a rare condition which causes a divergent squint.

But she has increasingly been brought into the spotlight after becoming a bridesmaid at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

And the young Royal seemed to be thoroughly enjoying watching the racing at the Christmas meeting at Ascot.
