LAWRENCE -- This is getting familiar. For the third straight game, Kansas overwhelmed an opponent in the first half, taking a 39-18 lead over Richmond at Allen Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.
The Jayhawks, 8-1, used an 18-0 run to open up a 33-11 lead before cruising into halftime. Freshman guard Ben McLemore finished the half with 10 points, and four rebounds, while senior center Jeff Withey had 11 points and eight rebounds in the opening half.Just as they did against Colorado and Belmont, the Jayhawks outclassed Richmond with defense and athleticism. The Spiders shot just 25.9 percent (seven for 27) in the first half and hit just four of 16 from three-point range. KU coach Bill Self used the half to give sophomore guard Naadir Tharpe and freshman guard Andrew White III some extra minutes. Kansas, which will play No. 7 Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus, looked like a team ready for a bigger challenge. Last Saturday, Kansas throttled Belmont 89-60, a victory that came just seven days after the Jayhawks demolished Colorado 90-54.Senior guard Elijah Johnson, who had nine assists against Belmont, again looked comfortable running the show for Kansas. He finished the half with four points, four assists and one turnover.
