In the fickle world of fashion few things remain unchanged over the years.
But it seems female Royals down the ages have been able to count on one timeless garment when braving inclement weather on special occasions.
The princess coat has been a favourite of a very young Queen Elizabeth II.
And little has changed decades later as Sophie Wessex's daughter Lady Louise chose to wear the classic item during a trip to the races today.
Timeless: A very young Queen, left in picture, wears the timeless classic coat as they head to Olympia on 26th June 1934, left, while decades later the style is little changes as Lady Louise Windsor attends Ascot today
Lady Louise Windsor, nine, accompanied father and mother Prince Edward and Sophie, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, as well as her brother Viscount Severn during the Christmas Meeting at Ascot.
The ninth in line to the throne, was pictured cheering on Simonsig to victory in the Bettfred Novices Steeple Chase, while wearing the tweed knee-length coat to keep out the chill.
But flash back almost eight decades and there is a striking similarity with that picture of a very young Queen.
Ageless style: Princess Anne, with Prince Charles, attends the Royal Windsor Horse Show, 12th May 1958, left, while, right, Lady Louise is pictured wearing a similar classic princess coat at Ascot today
In fashion: A young Queen Elizabeth II walks in to visit the Royal Tournament at Olympia in 1932, left, Lady Louise Windsor cheers on Simonsig to victory in the Bettfred Novices Steeple Chase, right
Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Princess Margaret Rose, both wore similar princess coats as they arrived hand in hand with the late Queen Mother, on 26th June 1934.
In the past Prince Edward and wife Sophie have been reluctant to allow Lady Louise to be photographed because she was born with exotropia, a rare condition which causes a divergent squint.
But she has increasingly been brought into the spotlight after becoming a bridesmaid at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
And the young Royal seemed to be thoroughly enjoying watching the racing at the Christmas meeting at Ascot.
